Remembering Will "Da Real One" Bell Lost But Never Forgotten
**Will "Da Real One" Bell was killed violently early Sunday morning outside his cafe in Miami. Get to know him, get to know his work so that his legacy can continue on in us and our children.**
WHO IS DA~REALONE? Will Bell, "Da~RealOne," while growing up in the Liberty City projects of Miami. It wasn't unusual for him to be suddenly awakened on school mornings by the sounds of Marvin Gaye singing "Sexual Healing" on the household stereo and the loud laughter of a house full of people engrossed in card games. The separation of his parents, the need to belong, and the lack of positive neighborhood surroundings are just some of the adversities that allowed him to make the amazing transition from troubled youth to a five time nationally televised spoken word artist. Early on he wrote and recited for only friends until a close friend read a powerfully poignant piece he had written called "Still Swinging." So moved by this piece, he was asked if he realized that people were gracing stages all over the country with poetry like this. His answer was, "No." He was immediately introduced to another poet who took him to his first spoken word venue where his words blazed the stage and without even knowing what it was, he had entered a "Lip, Tongue, and Ear" Poetry Slam and walked away with first place!
Goodbye to a voice of a generation and beyond, Gil Scott-Heron
Gil Scott- Heron's "Reflection's Cover" |
One of the most important progenitors of rap music, Gil Scott-Heron's aggressive, no-nonsense street poetry inspired a legion of intelligent rappers while his engaging songwriting skills placed him square in the R&B charts later in his career, backed by increasingly contemporary production courtesy of Malcolm Cecil and Nile Rodgers(of Chic). Born in Chicago but transplanted to Tennessee for his early years, Scott-Heron spent most of his high-school years in the Bronx, where he learned firsthand many of the experiences that later made up his songwriting material. He had begun writing before reaching his teenage years, however, and completed his first volume of poetry at the age of 13. Though he attended college in Pennsylvania, he dropped out after one year to concentrate on his writing career and earned plaudits for his novel, The Vulture. Encouraged at the end of

Submit Your Poetry For Consideration in Saul Williams new project!!
Taken from his blog, you can find the original article here
Dear Friends,
I’m pleased to announce that I will be editing an anthology of fresh voices in poetry that will be published by MTV Books. Although I am classifying this book as an anthology it may, technically, be more accurate to label it as a literary (re)mixtape where I will be playing the role of DJ- cutting and splicing your submissions to create a larger cohesive poem that reads as a singular epic. Get it? We will be collaborating, in a sense, writing a poem together- all of our voices intertwined… in your words, not mine.
Here’s what you do:
* write a poem on any topic you choose (2 page max).
* submit it by sending it to martyrloserking@gmail.com by no later than June 15th.
* I, along with the help of editors Aja Monet and Dufflyn Lammers, will choose 100 poems. If your poem is selected you will need to sign and return a permission form that will allow us to print your poem and to splice it into the re-mix.
* While there is no pay, all authors will be credited in the book and will receive a free copy upon release.
* Please also include mailing address, email address, phone number, and indicate which is the best way to reach you, as well as a very brief one paragraph bio.
If this idea appeals to you then I would like to offer an open invitation for you to submit one poem and add your voice to the chorus.
Saul
