Oddisee- Rock Creek Park free download

Oddisee debuted his newest album Rock Creek Park on titunes today!

Oddisee Says:
This has been one of my most productive summers & somehow I've managed to still enjoy the outdoors. I moved to Brooklyn, New York in October so this has been my first official summer in NYC. The inspiration I've received from my new environment has definitely had a positive impact on my music.  Once the weather broke, I spent allot of time cycling around New York & through its parks. It reminded me how much I loved Rock Creek Park in my home town, Washington, DC. This album is dedicated to Rock Creek Park & the memories its given me.

The Song:
To give everyone a taste, Oddisee & MMG are giving away the song Still Doing It featuring yU of Diamond District.  The song opens with hand drums and piano before breaking into tambourine shakes and yU's brillant flow.  The humble king takes us on a lyrical ride through the park.  The perfect end of summer jam, Still Doing Itlets you feel the breeze and trees without losing any of the musical edge you expect from an artist like Oddisee who is always pushing boundaries.   So relive the last moments of summer with Oddisee & yU"Pennslyvania Ave, we rolling around, this is summertime we got the windows down."  Then slide into Autumn with Rock Creek Park.

Listen to the album & enjoy!  Then spread the word to your people.

Shout out to I LIVE HIP HOP for this post. The Black Opera is new to me but after a little research I am  definitly intrigued. More to come- Paradyme

Freedom's Ink chats with Chicago MC, Singer, Producer and all around Bad Ass chick Nikki Lynette (@nikkilynette)

Paradyme had the chance to talk to Chicago Mc, Singer, Tv Host, Producer and all around bad ass chick Nikki Lynette about her career and future plans. She has a new video for her track 'Shut the F*** Up Boy' from the blazin' mixtape 'Roses N’ Guns 2: The BADDER ASSED Mixtape That Rocks'. Her unique style and multi-faceted artistry definitly makes her a favorite over here at Freedom's Ink.

FI- You have such an authentic style in both music and fashion. Is there any artists both old school and new inspire you creatively?

NL-As far as contemporary artists go, I'm inspired greatly by N.E.R.D., The Noisettes, Kelis, and Lupe Fiasco. My old school inspirations are Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper, Prince, Debbe Harry...people who rock the hell out. I was shy as a kid, but I've always loved the freedom rockers have, the "I don't give no fuck" attitude, and how their personality showed in every aspect of their lives from their hair to their music to their style of dress. That's the life for me! LoL

FI- You are definitly an artist who is paving her own way on her own terms, have you ever felt pressured to fit into the mold? How did you handle that?

When I initially started doing music to get my name out there, I was told that I wasn't urban enough and I wouldn't make it for that reason. I did an entire mixtape of me rapping over industry beats that had been given to me by well meaning DJs who were trying to hep me "sound more black." The people I was working with even had write with Urban artists so I'd have more Urban friendly hooks. I was hella young, so I didn't know any better than to go along with it. Then I got fed up because when I wanted to branch out and do music I wanted to do, nobody supported me. No producer would give me the kind of beats I needed, so I started producing my own beats. Nobody would help me get my music out there so I did it myself. Now that my stuff is on tv and I have a great fanbase, people support what I'm doing. Go figure.

FI-I would love to hear your advice to your young female fans about persuing a career in music.

NL-Learn the business. Learn the main ways that people are making money and keep up with how that changes, because it changes a lot these days. Figure out how you can maintain a competitive edge over other people who are pursuing the same goals as you. That's why I've divide myself in half. Half of me is Rosey Gunz, the crazy free-spirited recording artist who lives for fun, music, and cereal. The other half of me is Lynette Metro, the non-nonsense businesswoman who doesn't believe in doing anything that does not lend itself to making money or the growth of my brand. Is it hard to be both a businesswoman and an artist? Yes. It's hard as hell. But if you want to succeed in this industry then you gotta do what you gotta do.

FI-What are 3 things that you would like to accomplish in your career?

NL-I want to do an international tour, write/produce a score for a movie, and start an organization that help normalize the lives of kids in battered women's shelters. I went through that with my family & being homeless at such a young age is tough, I'd like to help make it better for them.

"Made In America" an essay on Hip Hop by Catalina Byrd

This may end up being a bit long...before we get into the "hip-hop" discussion let me give a little background to my position on certain subjects. I've never really cared for the term African-American, as a strong believer that there is power in every word spoken - I refuse to purposefully remove myself from my country. I belong to a race that was created right here in the United States of America. My ancestors built this country and it is my brth right. I am an American anywhere else in the world why shouldn't I be in my home? Another social discussion I took an open position on was that of generational indifference. An ill of our society that I'm certain happens in all races but I find most pervasive among my race. All elders are not guilty of this of course, but far too many are and some of whom are in positions of power too vain to concede even the knowledge of how lead - cultivating the polar opposite of wisdom...blind faith. I'm certain I don't have to go into my feelings about political parties versus the political process lol, have every confidence that you are clear on that one, so know that I take special objection to this myth that is continuously spread that Black and Democrat or Black and

Lady Like live @ Zanzibar

The fabulous Amber Ojeda performing "Lady Like" live at Zanzibar.

Happy 48th Birthday Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston was born on August 9, 1963, in Newark, NJ.  She is the daughter of the late, John Houston and her mother, famed singer, Cissy Houston. Her daughter is Bobbi Kristina Houston Brown. Whitney was born into a musical family. She is the cousin of Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick and Aretha Franklin is her godmother. With over 170 million combined album singles and videos sold worldwide during her career at Arista Records, Whitney established herself as  SUPERSTAR!  Clive Davis went to a nightclub where Whitney was performing and he signed her on the spot. Her first album, self-titled Whitney Houston (March 1985) launched Arista's second decade and they had a string of hits on that album. The hits were:  "You Give Good Love," "Saving All My Love For You," "How Will I Know,"  and "The Greatest Love of All" which became an anthem. The album sold over 12 million copies in the U.S., plus millions and millions more abroad. The album set the record as the biggest selling debut album by a solo artist. Houston is a mezzo-soprano. Her vocal range extends from G below middle C to high B-flat; she can belt out to treble F.  She came in third on MTV's 22 Greatest Voices, and sixth on Online Magazine COVE's list of the 100 Best Pop Vocalists with a score of 48.5/50. She is THE most awarded female artist of all time and has released a total of 7 albums! We wish her a HAPPY BIRTHDAY today!!!! ♫ Kandee MusicLvr ♫

THROWBACK VIDEO - EN VOGUE - Giving Him Something He Can Feel & My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)

En Vogue is a female vocal group formed in July 1989 in Oakland, CA. The original members Cindy Herron, Terry Ellis, Maxine Jones and Dawn Robinson, who were the brainchild of production team Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy, set a standard for female R&B and pop acts like Destiny's Child, 3LW and 702. They have won more MTV Video Music Awards than any other female group in MTV history, a total of seven, along with four Soul Train Awards, six American Music Awards, and seven Grammy nominations. Per Billboard Magazine, they were the 18th most popular and successful female group of all time.  Foster and McElroy recruited singers who possessed strong voices, noticeably good lucks, and intelligence. Originally, they selected the name "For You" as the groups name. They shifted to "Vogue" but ultimately settled on En Vogue, upon learning that another group had already claimed the Vogue moniker. Their first album was released April 3, 1990 and was enttitled "BORN TO SING." The first single, Hold On, was released to radio in late February 1990 and became a crossover pop hit, reaching number two on Billboard's Hot 100 singles charts, and number one on both the R&B singles and Hot Dance Music/Club Play charts. The next 2 singles, "Lies" and "You Don't Have To Worry" each went to number one on the Billboard R&B charts, while the fourth and final single "Don't Go" charted at number three on the Billboard R&B. The album was later certified platinum by the RIAA. Their second album, Funky Divas was released in the spring of 1992. The album debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Billboard R&B and it went multi-platinum. The albums first two singles: "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" and "My Loviin' (You're Never Gonna Get It) both went top ten pop and peaked at number one on the R&B charts. In 1994-1996 they took some downtime. On May 11, 2009 the group appeared on ABC's The View to perform and announce their future reunion tour.
